Wellbeing and Academic Achievement

We recognise the essential interconnectedness that exists between wellbeing and academic achievement and we strive to implement best practice approaches that ensure our students grow and strengthen their social, personal, relational and critical capabilities. Not only do confident and resilient young people perform better academically, the capacity for emotional intelligence that accompanies these qualities ensures that our students are better prepared to form strong social bonds and to sustain responsible behaviours.

“...relationship is key to building a sense of belonging, connection and self-efficacy...”

Valuable Learning Experiences

All staff are committed to nurturing an environment that offers opportunities to consistently develop the skills necessary to become resilient, self-aware, socially aware problem solvers. We offer a combination of school based and external programmes to ensure that our students are engaged in valuable learning experiences that equip them to respond to challenge and opportunity in a measurable and responsible way. Staff perform a mentoring role, within our Learning Mentors Programme, working with students to set goals, reflect on strengths and achievements and strategise for improvement.

Vertical House System

Our vertical House System affords the opportunity for strong community bonds to develop between students across year levels and with a core team of staff. The resulting mentoring that we witness between senior and junior students, the pride in House achievement and the social outreach that occurs within these groups symbolises the strength of our wellbeing approach. Students embrace leadership roles within their Houses, embarking on initiatives that enhance the school community.

Working closely as a team, our House Coordinators guide, support and challenge our students to be their best in all their endeavours. Reinforcing high expectations of our students, the team endeavours to provide a variety of experiences that grow student self-belief and empathy.

Rita Pierson tells us “Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connections and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.” It is this premise that underpins our Wellbeing approach at Xavier High School.
