Year Twelve students are studying Social Inclusion and Exclusion as part of their Society and Culture HSC content. After consultation with members of the Islamic community the girls donned head scarves to walk a mile in the shoes of an Islamic woman during the school day here at Xavier.
Students, who have been examining gender in Afghanistan, agreed to spend the day under modified Sharia Law in order to develop their empathy and understanding of this issue. Among the multitude of rules female students were not permitted to speak to men, including their teachers, lest they wish to be married off to them. Male students treated the girls as their sisters and had to escort them to and from each of their classes throughout the day. For more information please speak to one of our Society and Culture students as they would love the chance to discuss their findings with you.
