STEAM Innovation and Success – Liam Parkinson

As part of the Bio-mimicry and innovative product design unit in Year 9 STEAM during 2017 Liam Parkinson (now Yr 10) developed a design for a cricket helmet informed by the structure of a turtles shell. The aim was to produce better aerodynamics and ventilation.
Liam submitted his design for The Peoples Helmet Competition launched by Cricket NSW in conjunction with McDonalds. Consequently, Liam’s design was chosen as one of 11 winning helmet designs made into Masuri cricket helmets and worn by the NSW Blues at their Sheffield Shield match in February 2018 at the SCG.

Last Thursday 15th February the winners were invited to hand over their designed helmet to the players and receive a $500 cash prize. Liam got to meet and talk to current NSW cricket players and had a free tour of the SCG. Mickey Edwards wore Liam’s design in the Sheffield Shield game against South Australia on Friday 16th February- Tuesday 20th February.

We congratulate Liam for his impressive efforts and success. No doubt it is the beginnings of further innovative success!
Well done Liam!
