Year 12 Society and Culture students study Social Inclusion and Exclusion in Afghanistan as one of their HSC depth studies. As such today the girls are wearing hajibs and being escorted to and from classes by their “brothers” in our subject who are serving as their mahrams. Girls are not permitted to show their faces under Sharia Law and would not speak with males who are not members of their families. Already they have found the looks and comments from many other members of the Xavier community challenging. Please ask them about their experience tomorrow to see what they get out of this participant observation and how it has effected their own cultural bias.
