OLIVIA Barber could almost call herself a Perth local.
Only four days after playing for NSW Country at the national under-16 basketball championships in Western Australia, the Xavier High School student made the long trek back to line-up for the state under-15 girls football side.
The result was stunning.
The 185-centimetre Barber turned in a series of strong performances in the ruck and at full-forward to be crowned player of the carnival.
“I was a bit surprised (to be named player of carnival) because I don’t really play too much footy,” Barber, 15, said.
“I just play with the school side.
“It was so much fun over in Perth.”
Fellow Border players Charlotte Beavan, Tayla Sanson and Zali Spencer also played in the NSW girls’ team which went down to Victoria in the grand final.
Barber, one of the Lady Bandits’ rising stars, isn’t finished just yet with the youngster off to Sydney later this month to try out for the state netball side.
“Basketball is still my favourite sport I guess,” she said.
“Footy is really good though as you don’t hold back.”
