On Thursday 30 July Xavier’s U15 Boys AFL teams competed in the Giants Cup Southern NSW Finals held in Canberra. The carnival saw the Xavier represent the Albury zone against winners from other Southern NSW regions including Wagga Wagga, Southern Riverina, MIA, Canberra and South Coast to find the eventual winner in the GWS recruiting zone. Each team played 2 pool matches followed by finals. Xavier’s results for the day were as follows:
Game 1: Xavier 3 – 2 – 20 lost to Kildare CC Wagga 3 – 4 – 22
Game 2: Xavier 6 – 6 – 42 defeated Lumen CC Pambula 3 – 2 – 20
Game 3 Xavier 5 – 5 – 35 defeated Finley High School 2 – 1 – 13
Xavier’s U15 team had a competitive day at Kippax Oval in Belconnen, winning 1 of their pool games, having a narrow loss and eventually finishing third. The game against Kildare was a tightly contested game with Xavier fighting hard throughout. We trailed Kildare by 7 points at halftime, but hit back with 2 goals to take a 4 point lead with a minute to go. However, Kildare got the next clearance, marking inside 50 with a resulting goal with 15 seconds to go. Xavier backed up straight away against Lumen Christi who dominated possession early in the first half and applied scoreboard pressure to Xavier with the first 3 goals. Xavier lifted, and despite Lumen’s best efforts, were able to kick the next 6 goals to record a solid victory in blustery conditions. Xavier then played Finley HS in a playoff for third place. A strong breeze was favouring Xavier in the 1st half and they piled on 4 early goals to open up a 29 point lead to halftime. Finley took advantage of the wind after the break and were much more competitive, but Xavier worked hard to run out 22 point winners. Kildare were the overall winners of the day defeating St Francis, Leeton by 19 points in the final. Xavier’s better players on the day were Rohan Gates, Tom O’Brien, Kolby Hennessey, Cooper Boyle, Charlie Langford, Riley Bice, Adam Martin, Darcy Smith and Luke Dahl.
